Faster Switching from Standard Couplers
Optocouplers offer tremendous advantages in minimizing EMI and noise susceptibility. It is not an exaggeration to say that a healthy sprinkling of opto-isolation has often meant the difference between a “good idea” and working product. Yet, these very useful devices are often overlooked as possible solutions in designs because they are perceived to be “slow”. It is true that there are some limi...
متن کاملSlow-light switching in nonlinear Bragg-grating couplers.
We study propagation and switching of slow-light pulses in nonlinear couplers with phase-shifted Bragg gratings. We demonstrate that power-controlled nonlinear self-action of light can be used to compensate for dispersion-induced broadening of pulses through the formation of gap solitons, to control pulse switching in the coupler, and to tune the propagation velocity.
متن کاملZeno effect and switching of solitons in nonlinear couplers.
The Zeno effect is investigated for soliton type pulses in a nonlinear directional coupler with dissipation. The effect consists in increase of the coupler transparency with increase of the dissipative losses in one of the arms. It is shown that localized dissipation can lead to switching of solitons between the arms. Power losses accompanying the switching can be fully compensated by using a c...
متن کاملSwitching dynamics of solitons in fiber directional couplers.
A simple analytical approach based on a variational formalism is applied to an analysis of the switching dynamics of solitons in fiber nonlinear directional couplers. It is demonstrated that soliton switching may be described by a simplified Hamiltonian model that displays three different regimes of soliton dynamics, depending on the universal parameter, which is the ratio of the squared intens...
متن کاملSoliton controlling, switching, and splitting in nonlinear fused-fiber couplers
We propose an exactly solvable model of soliton-based pulse control that describes the physically important situation when the soliton period is much longer than the length of the coupling region in a nonlinear fiber coupler. This case can occur, e.g., in fused-fiber couplers. We demonstrate that the problem of soliton interaction and switching in such a coupler can be reduced to a linear relat...
